Performing as both artist and sculptor, I combine a method of quick-painting on copper plate with nailing on rescued wood tables to create female figures like goddesses of war.
My sketches are born spontaneously and are then shaped. I work in two distinct phases – painting embodies the spontaneous, and I live this creative moment with great intensity. But the finished works are the realization of a complete project, and the preparation of the tables follows the outline of the original design.
My inspiration comes from animals and monsters of the fantastic realm, often from medieval bestiaries. I began my research in Italy, where one finds many links with the Middle Ages.
My compositions are emotionally dynamic: inside they breathe a medieval style; mythological and religious figures are paganized through beasts of Medieval imaginary realm: dragons, gargoyles.
In recent years my career has evolved in a different way, the women I represent are not set anymore against a foe, but they penetrate it: the results are figures with female bodies and animal heads. In the background, small insects invade the entire compositional space, complicating the relation between space and subject.
These insects are often drawn in stationary positions and are copied endlessly, as if they were made mechanically.
